Happy Fourth of July, everyone! I know a lot of my flist friends are from other countries, and I beg their indulgence today. I just want to state for the record that I'm happy and proud to be an American, particularly today.

Oh I know my country has its share of problems and troubles. I know as a nation we're not universally loved or even respected, but I also know that given the standard of living for a lot of other places, I know I'm pretty damned lucky. I have a good job, a fine family, the freedom to choose my elected officials and the right to worship as I want.

Those are wonderful benefits, and for this day, I'm not going to take them for granted. I'm sending up a big 'thank you' for every citizen of this country who in the past fought for those rights, and a 'thank you' for every citizen of this country who now benefits from those rights.
