It starts out with young Ned starting to realize his gift, though he doesn't know the full magnitude as of yet.

Next we meet young "Chuck". Chuck is Ned's crush and they play in her front yard. Monsters attacking the cardboard and playdough city beneath them.

After they played Ned's mother was dusting him off with the broom as he watched Chuck's dad hosing her off through the window.

Suddenly his mother passes out and young Ned looked confused. He bent down to her and touched her check which she awoke.

She brushed it off thinking she just slipped and got up to remove her pie from the oven.

A minute later Ned (as well as Ned's mother) noticed Chuck's dad drop dead.

Ned realized that he could only bring the dead back for a minute. If any longer someone else had to die.

That night Ned's mother is tucking him in and when she gives him a kiss night, she dies.

"First touch life, second touch dead again- forever".

The funerals followed. Both the same day. (It's explained that Ned's dad ships him off to bordering school and never seen again. Where Chuck is fostered by her two aunts.) At the funerals the two children walk over to each other and have their first and only kiss.

We learn that after the death of his Mother, Ned becomes a social outcast. He's afraid to get close to someone and they die too. Also Ned obsession is pies.

Present time and Ned is a pie maker. He uses "dead" fruit to make his pies. Cause when he touches them they rippen.

At The Pie Hole we meet Emerson Cod (the soul keeper of the Pie Makers secret)and Olive Snook.

It goes on to tell us how Emerson and Ned came to know each other. We see Emerson, who is a private detective chasing a guy across the roof tops. The assalent falls and bounces off of a trash container (those big ones stores use) and into Ned's arms. Of course he comes back to life and takes off running and Ned chases him and touches him, dead again.

Emerson sit and talk about their first job. A dog, Cantaloupe, is a accused of killing her owner and will be put down. Emerson says Cantaloupe was framed. We learn the details of the crime.

Emerson and Ned head to the morgue. Emerson can't take the look of the vic, Leo, and leaves the room. Ned sets his watch and touches the guy. They have a short conversation and it is learned the the nature of the murder. The Secretary in the home office with her Rottweiler.
